Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy: What You Need to Know
Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy: What You Need to Know
From 1st September 2025, the manufacturer of Mounjaro (Eli Lilly) will be increasing UK prices to bring them in line with the rest of Europe. This means the cost of Mounjaro will rise to between £160 to £320 per pen, depending on your dose.
At Get A Drip, we know how important stability is when you’re on a weight management plan. Price changes can feel disruptive, especially when you’ve been making great progress. Our priority is always your long-term health and wellbeing, and our clinical team is here to guide you through your options - including whether switching to Wegovy may be the right step for you.
Why is Mounjaro increasing in price?
When Mounjaro first launched in the UK, it was introduced at a lower cost to ensure patients could access treatment. Eli Lilly has now aligned UK pricing with other European countries.
This change affects all providers in the UK and is not set by Get A Drip. The medication itself has not changed - only the price.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy, developed by Novo Nordisk, is a once-weekly weight loss injection that works by activating the GLP-1 receptor. It helps you feel fuller for longer, reduces hunger, and supports long-term weight loss.
While it differs slightly from Mounjaro (which also works on the GIP receptor), Wegovy has demonstrated strong results in clinical studies and is considered an effective alternative.
Why consider switching to Wegovy?
Some of the benefits of Wegovy include:
- Proven results: Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15–21% of body weight.
- High-dose outcomes: The upcoming 7.2mg dose has shown results of up to 21-25% body weight loss in some patients, similar to Mounjaro.
- Health-focused fat loss: Wegovy helps reduce visceral fat while preserving lean muscle.
- Improved waist measurement: Average reductions of up to 5.3 inches around the waist.
- Heart health benefits: Wegovy is the only GLP-1 licensed in the UK to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with heart disease - even if no weight is lost.
What does switching involve?
Switching medication doesn’t mean starting over. At Get A Drip, our prescribers will review your full treatment history to create a tailored plan. This includes:
- How long you’ve been on Mounjaro
- Any side effects you’ve experienced
- Your weight loss progress so far
- Your current dosing history and future goals
If you’ve tolerated Mounjaro well, you may be able to start Wegovy at a higher dose. If you’ve had side effects, a gentler approach with a lower dose may be more suitable.
Will I need a “washout” period?
In most cases, only a 7-day gap is needed between your last Mounjaro dose and your first Wegovy injection. This allows side effects (like nausea or bloating) to settle before switching.
Because Mounjaro works on both GLP-1 and GIP, while Wegovy only acts on GLP-1, there’s no receptor conflict - making a supported switch safe and effective when supervised by our clinical team.
What Wegovy dose will I start on?
The right dose will depend on:
- Your response to Mounjaro
- Any side effects you’ve had
- Your current weight
- How long you’ve been on treatment
Your prescriber will recommend the most appropriate starting dose to keep your progress on track. In many cases, you won’t need to restart from the lowest dose unless clinically necessary.
At Get A Drip, your prescription is always personalised, and you’ll have ongoing support throughout your journey.
