What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is the first oral GLP-1 weight loss treatment to receive MHRA approval in the UK. It contains semaglutide – the same clinically-proven active ingredient used in Wegovy injections – but in a once-daily tablet format. For patients who want the benefits of GLP-1 treatment without a weekly injection, it opens up a meaningful new option. Like all GLP-1 receptor agonists, semaglutide works by mimicking a hormone your gut naturally produces after eating.

  • Reduces appetite and curbs cravings throughout the day.
  • Slows gastric emptying so meals keep you fuller for longer.
  • Supports more stable blood sugar levels.

Dosage guide

The Wegovy pill follows a stepped dose escalation. Starting low and building up gradually is standard practice with GLP-1 treatments – it gives your body time to adjust and significantly reduces the likelihood of side effects. Most patients reach the full treatment effect once they arrive at the 25mg maintenance dose. Your prescriber may extend the time at any dose if needed.

  • Month 1 – 1.5mg once daily (starting dose).
  • Month 2 – 4mg once daily (building up).
  • Month 3 – 9mg once daily (building up).
  • Month 4 onwards – 25mg once daily (maintenance).

How to take it

Take one tablet first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything other than a small amount of plain water (up to 120ml). Swallow the tablet whole – do not crush, split, chew, or dissolve it.

  • Wait at least 30 minutes before breakfast, other drinks, or oral medication.
  • Missed a dose? Skip it and carry on with your next scheduled tablet the following morning.
  • Do not double up on doses.

Clinical evidence

The Wegovy pill has been studied in the OASIS programme – a series of large Phase 3 trials investigating oral semaglutide for weight management. Results come from trials conducted alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, with clinical support – built into every Get A Drip programme – playing a meaningful part.

  • 16.6% average body weight loss over 64 weeks at the 25mg dose (OASIS 4).
  • Approximately 1 in 3 patients (34%) lost 20% or more of their body weight.
  • 77% of those with poor baseline physical function reported real improvements vs 43% on placebo (ECO 2026 data).

UK availability

The Wegovy pill has received MHRA approval and is now available in the UK on a private prescription. As a prescription-only medicine, it requires a clinical assessment before it can be prescribed.

  • Handled through Get A Drip's regulated telehealth platform.
  • A short eligibility assessment, reviewed by one of our prescribers.
  • Ongoing clinical support throughout your treatment.

Cost

Pricing depends on the dose and the length of your plan. As with all our GLP-1 treatments, longer subscription plans offer a lower monthly cost. Your prescriber will advise on the most appropriate starting dose, which determines your initial pricing tier.

  • Tiered pricing based on dose strength.
  • Lower monthly cost on longer subscription plans.
  • Full pricing available on the pricing page or via our team.

How it compares

Here is how the Wegovy pill sits alongside the other weight loss treatments we offer at Get A Drip. Weight loss figures are from separate clinical trials at each medication's highest approved dose, combined with diet and exercise. Individual results will vary.

Side effects

The side effect profile of the Wegovy pill closely mirrors that of the Wegovy injection. The most frequently reported effects are digestive and tend to be mild, emerging most strongly when starting treatment or increasing to a new dose. These usually ease within a few weeks as your body settles at each dose. If you experience sudden or severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or any signs of an allergic reaction, seek medical attention straight away.

  • Common: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation.
  • Also reported: stomach pain or bloating, fatigue, heartburn.
  • Report any changes to the Get A Drip clinical team – we monitor patients throughout treatment.

Is the Wegovy pill right for you?

The Wegovy pill is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above where a weight-related health condition is present. A Get A Drip prescriber will review your full health history before confirming whether it is clinically appropriate for you. Always tell your prescriber about any other medications you are taking, including diabetes treatments, before starting.

  • May suit you if you want GLP-1 benefits without an injection, have needle anxiety, or prefer a daily tablet routine.
  • Not suitable if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, pancreatitis, or significant kidney disease.
  • Not suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide.
Dr Luke Pratsides
“The arrival of a daily weight management tablet is a huge step forward for the treatment of obesity. It breaks down the barrier that existed for people who were averse to using needles or found it difficult to manage a weekly injection. For many people a daily tablet fits in much better with their current routine. We have seen outside the UK that the majority of people starting on a tablet are completely new to this kind of treatment. This is really key, because it means more people can now access the health benefits of weight loss, which go far beyond the number on the scales and contribute to reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and many forms of cancer.”
